LeSean McCoy’s reputation.
The grouping of words sounds, and reads, like the punchline to a joke. Or the start of one. As we drift further into the convoluted after-effect abyss of yet another “incident” involving the former Eagles’ All-Pro running back and current property of the Buffalo Bills, the biggest concern being voiced is about the potential damage being done to Shady’s image. The hit it may take. The black eye it may endure. Not for nothing, but what reputation are we talking about? We already know that the guy is cheap, that he is a spoiled child, that he exercises poor judgment, that he has no respect for authority or women. Accused of being involved in a beatdown of two off-duty Philadelphia police officers at a city club in the wee hours of the morning this past Sunday does nothing to change that. Neither does being a gifted athlete. In our haste to exonerate McCoy in the court of public opinion before any actual charges have been levied against him, reality has been given a stiff-arm while supporters and self-anointed “fair” prophets get wrapped up in his on-field glory and race. Why either of those things is being factored by anyone in any fashion defies logic, and common sense. All that matters is if he was involved, and to what extent. The acquittal can wait until the trial is complete … if one ever takes place. Indeed, if anything, the Philadelphia Police Department and Office of the District Attorney hardly give off the vibe that they’re developing an air-tight case against McCoy, and that word has wafted out stating the reason any case is being cobbled together at all is because it is against McCoy, who remains a high-profile figure in the area almost a year after he was traded away for Kiko Alonso, as if the fact he is a celebrity makes legal action a must, doesn’t exactly reek of “justice.” The injured police weren’t going to report what occurred until they realized who apparently was involved and what was at stake due to that. Huh? Sounds like another attempt at besmirching Shady’s reputation. All kidding aside, everyone comes out looking like a loser in this. The celebrity, the cops, the city’s legislative body … all of ’em seem to have played roles suited for a Jerry Springer show. Seriously, silliness abounds. Combatants squaring off in a public venue at 2:45 a.m. when all of them, including McCoy, are old enough to be in bed hours before and secure enough to have their own homes, and getting into it over a bottle of champagne to boot? C’mon, no self-respecting bar-room brawlers even waste their time with that lightweight stuff. The police rushing around to get their case together amid highly prejudicial comments directed at McCoy from their spokesman, and then the D.A. sitting on it for days. It’s comical. Embarrassing. All of it. To the point where you have to wonder just when Chip Kelly will be blamed for it. - Jack Kerwin | [email protected] |
