Uhhh. Umm. Hmm ...
With apologies to those who worship at the feet of former Eagles quarterback and current NFL analyst Ron Jaworski, genuflecting every time he utters the obvious, or the consensus BS of those around him, as if he unearthed some hidden gem escaping the rest of us, the moment it was mentioned that he was involved in determining the Eagles’ latest head coach, my reaction was instinctual and guttural: Yep, figures. Brrrralph … Not for nothing, but Jaws – not to mention fellow fan favorite jabbermouth Jon Gruden – ain’t exactly the stand-on-his-own, fountain of insight that the starry-eyed minions out there would like to believe. If you want someone who, genuinely, seems to like everyone, or find the positive in anyone, and get on board with the group, then Jaworski is your guy. Pro or con, whatever the ultimate decision may be, he’ll join the pack … with not a smidge of dissention. But, the voice of reason, or an opinion all his own, don’t expect to get either, if they even exist … unless, of course, they fall in line with whatever seems to be popular with those around him. Put it this way, Jaws may sing the praises right now of the process, that included his input, it took to choose Doug Pederson and then hire him, but the further he distances himself from Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Co. in the coming weeks, months, years, don’t be surprised when that tune changes and revisionist history starts to run rampant. From the lips of those who idolize the guy, or those belonging to the guy himself. Unless, that is, Pederson turns out to be a prodigy in his new position. Then it would be a case of, “told ya, knew it all along.” The reality is, in this case, and most others, no one knows. There is no evidence of what Pederson can do as an NFL head coach. He doesn’t have the background to suggest he’s prepared for this, and, for a lot of people, the personality or command to show he’ll be able to handle this. Further, when the vacancy emerged with several others in the NFL, four candidates stood above all others, and Pederson wasn’t any of them. Yet the Birds chose him while offering those others little more than the runaround, a courtesy call, no call and, well, a few parting shots to go with his walking papers. Sorry, for me, there is no stamp of approval that is warranted for this search, and if it’s coming from Jaws don’t see it as one anyway. - Jack Kerwin | ydkjack1@gmail.com |
